Start here / Three questions
Most kratom users have first
What is kratom?
Mitragyna speciosa leaf, mitragynine pharmacology, mu-opioid partial agonism, why it's different from opioids.
Which strain?
Red vs white vs green vein, Maeng Da vs Bali vs Borneo vs Indo vs Malay. Picking a first strain.
What is 7-OH?
7-hydroxymitragynine — the more potent kratom alkaloid. FDA scheduling watch. Why extract products are different.

Kratom Strain Index
Maeng Da
Often the most potent strain commonly sold in the US. 'Maeng Da' translates loosely to 'pimp grade' — a marketing term that stuck. Mitragynine content typically higher than other commercial strains.
Bali
Widely available and typically moderately priced. The name is historical — most "Bali" kratom is actually grown in Borneo. A beginner-friendly strain with consistent alkaloid profile.
Borneo
Borneo kratom comes from the Borneo island region of Indonesia. Generally considered mellow and long-lasting, with a smoother effect curve than Maeng Da.
Indo
'Indo' is a catch-all term for Indonesian kratom not tied to a specific island. Typical alkaloid profiles fall within commercial averages; taste and effect can vary by supplier.
Malay
Malaysian kratom, though much harder to source legally from Malaysia itself (Malaysia prohibits kratom domestically). Most US "Malay" is actually Indonesian sold under a Malay label.
Yellow Vein
"Yellow vein" kratom is produced by post-harvest fermentation or blending of red and green leaves. Not a distinct plant variety. Effects are subjective and vary by producer.
Kratom is biologically active — start low, understand withdrawal.
Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) interacts primarily with mu-opioid receptors as a partial agonist. While it does not recruit beta-arrestin-2 as strongly as traditional opioids, prolonged frequent use leads to downregulation and physical dependence.
The risk profile shifts dramatically between raw leaf powder and highly concentrated extract shots (7-OH). We recommend verifying AKA-GMP compliance and laboratory COAs for every purchase.
Dependence & Tolerance
Physical dependence can occur with regular daily use. Cessation after long-term high dosage typically initiates opioid-like withdrawal symptoms including insomnia, RLS, and anxiety.
Legal Status (US)
Federally legal, but banned in AL, AR, IN, RI, VT, WI. Many municipalities (Sarasota FL, San Diego CA) have local bans.
FDA 7-OH Scheduling Watch
The FDA has signaled intent to schedule 7-hydroxymitragynine. Products featuring elevated 7-OH (Hydroxie tablets, 7 OHMZ, 7 Tabz) carry materially higher dependence risk than leaf kratom.
